A Five-Minute Website Check Every Small Business Owner Should Do

Your website does not need to be complicated, but it does need to help customers quickly understand your business and take the next step.

Set aside five minutes, open your website on your phone, and check these five things.

1. Can visitors immediately tell what your business does?

A new visitor should understand your business within a few seconds. Your business name, primary service, and service area should be easy to find near the top of the page.

Avoid making customers search through several pages just to understand what you offer.

2. Is your contact information easy to find?

Your phone number, contact form, address, and business hours should be clearly visible.

On a mobile phone, visitors should be able to tap your phone number to call you. They should not need to copy the number, zoom in, or search through the footer.

3. Does the website work well on a phone?

Most customers will visit your website from a mobile device.

Make sure the text is easy to read, buttons are large enough to tap, images fit the screen, and the navigation menu is simple to use.

A website that works well on a desktop computer can still be frustrating on a phone.

4. Is the information current?

Check your hours, services, pricing, staff information, phone number, address, and social media links.

Outdated information can create confusion and make customers question whether the business is still active.

This is also a good time to remove services you no longer offer and add anything new.

5. Is there a clear next step?

Every page should help visitors understand what they should do next.

That might mean calling, requesting an estimate, viewing a menu, booking an appointment, visiting your location, or completing a contact form.

Do not assume customers will know what to do. Make the next step easy and obvious.

Keep It Simple

A successful business website does not need constant redesigns, complicated features, or pages full of marketing language.

It needs to load quickly, work properly, answer common questions, and make it easy for customers to contact you.

Completing this quick review every few months can help you catch small problems before they cost you business.
