Rainwater at Ridgeview
Come join Camp Fire Restoration Project for another in-person workshop learning about how to conserve one of our greatest resources, WATER!
Rain water harvesting is an underutilized approach to capture water and use it in our landscapes while saving money. This workshop will be full of goodies. First, we will discuss the in's and outs of developing catchment systems AND then get to get our hands dirty installing a 3000 gal tank rooftop to garden catchment system for Ridgeview High School's new community garden space. BUT WAIT there's more... we will also be attaching the system to 2 wicking garden beds. Not sure what those are, come out and learn about them AND help build one. We are super excited to not only let you learn from Robert Henry, a super skilled and knowledgeable expert in water catchment systems, but we love getting to use our workshop to support our local partners including Ridgeview High School and Buttle County Local Food's GROWN project who is facilitating the design and installation of the community garden space at the school. Nikki, from BCLFN will ne there to talk about the garden design and the GROWN project.
This event will also include several other exciting components:
1. A Fruit Tree Giveaway - through generous donations from State Farm and Arbor day, we will be distributing fruit trees for participants.
2. Per usual we will provide coffee/tea, light snacks, & a homemade lunch - TBD (Support our efforts for a zero-waste event by bringing your own plate/bowl, utensils, water bottle, and hot drink cup)
3. One lucky participant will take home a small rainwater catchment system kit
4. Our friends at Respectful Revolution will be out there filming the whole process and making a how-to video so you can go back and have all the information you need to install your own system.
Location: Ridgeview High School (5944 Maxwell Dr, Paradise, CA 95969)
Presenter: Robert Henry Robert has over 40 years experience in construction and earthworks. Robert got his Permaculture Design and Master Composter Certificates in 2013. Robert has been involved in teaching many permaculture classes over the years: earthworks and land restoration, zone and sector design, building items using pallets, composting, microscope work, and water capture classes including rainwater tank installation, Laundry to Landscape, making and using ollas, and how to make and use wicking beds. He has about 1.5 acres of his 8.5-acre property planted in fruit and nut trees along with raised vegetable beds. One of the first major projects on the property was installing swales to capture and sink water. The top swale, which is 185 feet long, is designed to mitigate flooding on adjacent properties. To date, Robert has over 16,000 gallons of rainwater catchment systems installed around his property.
Big thanks to North Valley Community Foundation and Butte Strong Fund for supporting the event.
