Compost Workshop
Join the Camp Fire Restoration Project for a day dedicated to composting! The hands-on workshop takes place at Sol Sanctuary Ranch, Paradise, and all are welcome. It’s free, but you are encouraged to register and make a donation on Eventbrite. You’ll learn different ways to compost, including 3-bin systems, windrows, static and thermal piles, and one lucky participant will receive a FULLY CONSTRUCTED WORM BIN to take home with them and start recycling their food scraps! Other topics will include troubleshooting your at-home composting, do’s and don’ts of compost pile/worm bin construction, and how to make sure you’re not contaminating your pile with unfriendly materials. Organizer Janel Luke said, “The state of California recently passed AB 1826, which states California must divert organic waste from landfills….This includes things like food wastes and yard maintenance products. Cal Recycle helped to amend this law by including allowances for small-scale community composting programs.” Under this program, she said, the Camp Fire Restoration Project is working to collect community food waste to create microbe-rich soil amendments for Paradise. Thus, Paradise Community Compost was born, where food scraps will be used to make compost that provides optimal microbial diversity and nutrients to gardens, farms, and surrounding ecosystems. Paradise Community Compost volunteers will also offer consultations for home-composters; this may include a site evaluation and recommendation for a composting system, and/or troubleshooting your existing system Become part of the waste solution! Carpool or ride your bike if you can—or drive right on in--to Sol Sanctuary, 4791 Round Valley Rd, just off Clark on the south side of town, on Saturday, October 30th at 11 a.m. for this informative and FUN workshop! Coffee, tea, water, and snacks will be provided!
